What Is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns or caps are custom made restorations fitted over a tooth to improve its strength or change its appearance.
Crowns may be used to restore a tooth that’s been chipped, cracked, worn down or damaged by severe decay. They may also be used to restore teeth following other dental procedures, such as root canal therapy, securing a dental bridge, or in cosmetic dentistry to change the size, shape or alignment of teeth.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
Dental bridges are prosthetic teeth that fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Different types of bridges may be used depending on what type of teeth are missing.
Bridges to replace front teeth are supported by clasps bonded to the back of the surrounding teeth. Other bridges are supported by crowns fitted over one or both adjacent teeth. Want to learn more? Call us on (08) 9495 7999 or book online.
Process for Placing a Crown
We first take diagnostic radiographs and check your suitability for crowns
A local anaesthetic is applied to numb your mouth
A thin layer of tooth enamel is removed
We take impressions for the lab technician to custom-design your new crown.
A temporary crown can be fitted until your final crown is back from the lab
Around 10 days later when your crown is ready, we’ll fit your crown and check your bite before cementing it into place.
Process for Placing a Bridge
We take x-rays and check treatment suitability for a bridge
Local anaesthesia is applied
Your dentist removes the outer layer of the teeth on either side of the gap
We take an impression of your mouth to be used by our lab technician to design your bridge and crowns
We may provide you with a partial denture to wear while your bridge and crowns are being created
When your crowns and bridge are ready, we’ll check that everything fits perfectly and feels comfortable, then we’ll cement the crowns to your teeth and attach the bridge in-between.
Alternate Treatment Options
Crowns and bridges aren’t the only options for restoring teeth. Your dentist will discuss other possible treatment options during your appointment so you can make a fully informed decision about what’s best for you. If a tooth only has minor chips, cracks or cavities, it may be possible to repair it with simple tooth bonding or composite or porcelain fillings.
Alternatives for replacing teeth include dental implants and full or partial dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are crowns and bridges made of?
Dental crowns and bridges are usually made from porcelain (ceramic), metal, or a combination of the two. Porcelain restorations are the most popular choice today for their more natural appearance.
At Kelmscott Dental, we use ceramic crowns that can be matched to your existing tooth shade. Ceramic crowns can last 15 years or longer with good care.
Who is suitable for a crown?
Our dentists may recommend a crown as an option for many reasons, including:
- severe tooth decay that can’t be treated with a filling
- chipped or cracked teeth or other dental emergencies
- weakened teeth caused by general wear and tear or teeth grinding
- aesthetic concerns such as changing the shape, size or alignment of teeth
- sealing a tooth following a root canal procedure or other treatment
Who is suitable for a bridge?
A dental bridge can be an option for replacing between one and four teeth in a row. If you have more than one gap in your smile, these will need separate bridges.
If you need to replace more than a few consecutive teeth, your dentist may recommend dentures or an implant bridge instead. The number of teeth you want to replace and their position in your mouth will determine the type of bridge that can be used.
How can I look after my crown or bridge?
Once cemented in place, a crown or bridge can take up to a week to bond fully to your teeth. During this time, you should avoid touching the restoration and eat soft foods that are easy to chew and won’t cause it to dislodge.
Once your crown or bridge has fully bonded, it should be cared for like your normal teeth with regular brushing and flossing to remove trapped food and bacteria.
